SQL Server Backup Requirements

Customers who utilize database backups provided by Blackbaud will be required to use Microsoft SQL Server 2019 or later to restore backups of their data from the public cloud environment.

FAQs

Q: What are the benefits of moving to the public cloud?

A: Blackbaud partners with industry-leading Cloud Service Providers(CSPs), such as our preferred provider Microsoft Azure®, to ensure your solutions benefit from modern infrastructure now and in the future. The public cloud leverages heightened enhanced security, reliability, stability, and performance. Benefits of Blackbaud Cloud Operations include:

Innovative, modern cloud infrastructure.
Adherence to the highest-level compliance certifications and laws, including PCI-DSS, PCI PA-DSS, SSAE 18 (SOC1, SOC2), GDPR, and alignment to best practices according to the Cloud Security Alliance and others.

Q: How does Blackbaud ensure the relocation process is secure, given the confidentiality/sensitivity of the information that is being transferred?

A: Customer data is fully encrypted, transferred, and stored in data encrypted storage containers during the timeframe of the customer relocation. Once the customer’s solution is moved into the public cloud environment successfully, all the encrypted stored data used to enable the relocation is deleted from the storage container.

Q: How long does it take to relocate to the public cloud? What should the expected downtime be?

A: Your relocation will be done overnight during off hours. You might also want to do some testing early the next morning. A friendly reminder that all users will need to be logged out during your scheduled window and we will notify you when it is complete.

Q: Is there any cost associated with relocating to the public cloud?

A: No, there are no costs associated with Raiser's Edge and/or Financial Edge relocations to the public cloud.

Q: Can I rename environments?

A: Yes, environments can be renamed. Please see Environments for detailed instructions.

Q: Will my nightly backups continue once I am relocated?

A: Yes, if you are currently getting a nightly backup, that will continue in the public cloud. Your nightly backups are now located under Database Options (access through the coin stack icon at the top right-hand corner of your screen). In order to access nightly backups in the cloud, you must be on SQL 2019 or later.

NOTE:

If you have more than one database, you'll need to be in the environment for the database that you want to see the backups for.
Your nightly/weekly backup database delivery timing may change and you may need to adjust any automated internal processes you may have to adjust to this new timing.

Q: Can we relocate and preserve existing files to be sure all expectations are met?

A: Your existing files will be preserved by Blackbaud in the private cloud environment for 30 days after the relocation.

Q: How do I terminate a Citrix session?

A: If you need to terminate an existing Citrix session, this can be done by clicking Database view options, and in the Session information box click Terminate session.

Q: How do I access my RE/FE Secure folders after relocation?

A: After upgrading to the public cloud environment the contents of your RE Secure and FE Secure folders will be added to a ZIP file and placed in Archived Files. You can access Archives Files by clicking Database view options and looking for the Archived Files tile. NOTE: These files will be retained for 90 days after you're upgraded. Please download them before they expire. Only Supervisors will be able to see the RE/FE Secure ZIP files.

Q: How do I change the regional settings for database view when hosted in the public cloud?

A: If you find that your Raisers Edge database view is showing the wrong currency or date format, you may have to adjust your regional settings. The following knowledgebase article will walk you through these steps: https://kb.blackbaud.com/knowledgebase/Article/110140.

Q: My organization uses plug ins, what happens when our solutions are moved into an Azure environment?

A: Most plug ins will continue to work in your Blackbaud Azure Environment. Please note: if your organization uses the PaperSave plug-in it may take up to 24 hours after your relocation for all functionality to be restored. There are a few plug-ins that will require additional action from you to work in an Azure environment:

Matchfinder – if your organization is using a legacy version of Matchfinder (Blackbaud’s MatchFinder® Plus or MatchFinder Online) you will need to upgrade to MatchFinder Search to have this functionality in Azure.
The PosPay plug-in is not supported in Azure, you will need to move to PosPay Web to retain this functionality once you are in an Azure environment. Please refer to this Omatic support article about how to move to PosPay Web.

Q: Will my database have TDE (Transparent Data Encryption) once we are in Azure?

A: Yes. Blackbaud is actively enabling TDE for all Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge customers in all public cloud environments including production and non-production without any customer effort or impact to normal customer operations. TDE is an industry standard best practice methodology that provides customers with the added security of full database encryption for all fields, including free-text note fields. TDE enablement does not require any action for customers to benefit from this additional layer of security.
